UCPD'S Police Blotter is compiled from selected incident reports and other activities involving the men and women of the Union City Police Department. This is does not represent a complete list of calls for service during the week being reported.

Week Ending May 17, 2012
  • On Thursday (5/10), officers responded to an in progress domestic battery in front of the Auto Zone store located at 32100 Alvarado Boulevard. When the primary officer arrived on scene, the suspect fled on foot. The officer intercepted the suspect and ordered him to the ground until additional officers arrived. The victim was being cared for by store employees, while officers arrested the suspect for domestic battery.

  • Additionally, a resident was cleaning out his deceased parent’s residence located on the 2400 block of Almaden Boulevard.  While cleaning the home, the resident discovered a possible explosive device labeled “Charge Supplemental For Artillery Shell – TNT” in the garage. The Union City Police Watch Commander summoned the Alameda County Bomb Squad.  The Bomb Squad collected the device and disposed of it without incident.

  • Later in the day, citizens called the “911” communications center to report a four year old child, in underwear clothing, roaming the area of the 33900 block of 9th Street. An officer found the child in the company of a concerned citizen who stood by with the child until officers arrived. The child was taken into protective custody. This case was sent to the Child Protective Service for additional follow-up.

  • Later this same night, officers responded to the Bank of America located on Alvarado Boulevard to investigate an armed robbery. The victim advised arriving officers that he was withdrawing money from the ATM when two black male adults in their 20’s confronted him. One of the suspects pointed a handgun at the victim and demanded the victim’s money and cell phone. The victim complied and the suspects fled towards Fair Ranch Road. The victim ran to a nearby liquor store to call the police. The first suspect was described as being about 5’-7” tall, medium length dreadlocks, wearing a red hat, black hoodie and jeans. The second suspect was described as being about, 5’-9”, 150 pounds, wearing a white and orange striped shirt and jeans.

  • On Friday (5/11), officers responded to an Apartment at 31770 Alvarado Boulevard to investigate a domestic disturbance. When the officers arrived, they found a couple arguing at the front door of the residence.  During the initial contact, the officers noticed that the female was visibly distraught and had sustained facial injuries.  Officers learned that the couple had been engaged in a heated argument, which escalated when the husband struck his wife in the face. The suspect was arrested for domestic battery and transported to jail.

  • Later this night, an officer observed a subject in the area of 5th Street and Whipple Road.  The subject matched the description of a wanted person for an incident that occurred earlier in the evening. The officer stopped to talk to him and noticed he was displaying symptoms of being under the influence of a controlled substance.  The officer conducted a drug evaluation of the subject and arrested him for being under the influence of a controlled substance.

  • Additionally, an officer patrolling the area of Marsten Avenue saw several subjects running in different directions when they saw his patrol car approaching. The officer saw two subjects hiding behind a car and ordered them to the ground until additional officers arrived. One of the subjects attempted to get up and had to be restrained in handcuffs. This same subject was found to be in possession of a switchblade knife. He was arrested for possession of a switchblade knife and resisting arrest.

  • Later this night, an officer patrolling the Union Landing Shopping Center saw a large group of car enthusiasts congregating in the parking lot. One of the subjects decided to show off and accelerated through the crowded parking lot.  The driver’s actions caused his vehicle to “fishtail” and nearly collided into two parked vehicles. The officer made an enforcement stop and arrested the driver for reckless driving and impounded his vehicle for 30 days.

  • Later during this same evening, a female victim called the “911” communications center to report that she had been raped. Officers met with the victim at the Union Landing Shopping Center and drove her to the police department to investigate this case. The victim advised that she was held against her will, battered and forced to have sex with her ex-boyfriend. Officers contacted the suspect who provided a full confession. The suspect was arrested for false imprisonment, domestic battery, and rape.

  • On Saturday night (5/12), an officer on routine patrol in the area of Whipple Road and Central Avenue saw a vehicle speeding and weaving in and out of the number two lane. The officer conducted an enforcement stop and noticed an odor of alcoholic beverage emitting from the driver. The driver was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol after she failed a series of field sobriety tests.

  • On Monday night (5/14/), the “911” communications center received a call from a witness stating that he had seen two black males arguing at the Mission View Apartments located at 4125 Dyer Street. The witness advised that one of the subjects produced a handgun and shot at the other subject as he fled. Arriving officers searched the area for potential victims and suspects, but did not locate anyone.  Officers located shell casings along the area of where the subjects were seen.

  • On Wednesday (5/16), officers responded to a residence on the 2400 block of Medallion Drive to investigate a domestic disturbance. Arriving officers were greeted at the door by a visibly distraught female.  The officers noticed that the female victim’s mouth was swollen. The female told officers that she and her husband had been engaged in a heated argument and her husband elbowed her in the mouth causing her injury. Officers entered the residence and arrested the husband for domestic battery.

  • Later this night, officers responded to a hit and run accident on Alvarado Niles Road at I880. The victims at the crash site suffered minor injuries and stated the suspect vehicle was a black Mercedes. An officer in the area of Alvarado Niles Road and Heritage located the suspect vehicle and conducted an enforcement stop. Through the course of the investigation, officers learned that the suspect had run the red light on Alvarado Niles Road at I880 and broadsided the victim vehicle, prior to leaving the scene. The driver was arrested for hit and run, and driving while under the influence of alcohol.
