City Council Provides Direction to Create Tenant/Landlord Mediation & Just Cause Eviction and Harassment Protections in Union City
This past Tuesday, the City Council voted to develop a tenant/landlord mediation ordinance and a just-cause eviction and harassment protection ordinance. This decision stems from recommendations made by the Rent and Tenant Task Force, which had convened 7 public meetings over the last few months to review options that address rising rents. We appreciate the dedication and passion of each task force member during this process and similarly thank the community members who took time out of their schedule to express their thoughts by attending a meeting, sending an email or making a phone call. The City Council will consider the processes and parameters of the tenant/landlord mediation ordinance in the coming weeks. We empathize with the people in our community who are affected by rising rents and we will continue to pursue affordable housing opportunities, as well as connect people to resources and social services, such as tenant/landlord counseling. The next phase of this process will continue to involve community input, so we encourage community members to stay connected with us.You can stay connected with us by going to http://www.unioncity.org/departments/economic-community-development/housing/rent-and-tenant-taskforce and signing up to receive notifications.
