Sugar Mill Landing Park is home to a powerful memorial to the heroes, the 33 passengers and 7 crew members, who died aboard United Airlines Flight 93 on September 11, 2001.

Flight 93 was headed to the Bay Area when it was hijacked by terrorists. Through their cell phones, the passengers and crew determined their plane was going to be used to target the nation’s capital, as part of the terrorists attacks unfolding on the morning of 9/11. The heroes of Flight 93 confronted the terrorists and a short time later the plan crashed in a field in Somerset County, Pennsylvania, killing everyone on board.

The Flight 93 Memorial consists of 40, one-ton remembrance stones representing each of the passengers and crew members. Engraved on each stone is the name, age and hometown of a hero. The memory stones line a walkway that flows from the “Circle of Remembrance,” where three 10-foot stones tell the story of Flight 93 and list the names of those who contributed to the memorial. The granite stones face a tree planted with soil from the field in Pennsylvania where the plane crashed. At the other end of the park is the "Plaza of Hope" with a flagpole surrounded by colorful tiles made by Union City schoolchildren.

Along with the children, hundreds of volunteers, including local residents, trade union workers, park planners and designers and others helped make the Union City Flight 93 Memorial a reality. Nearly all the materials, equipment and services that went into the building of the memorial was donated. “This is a project that involved the whole community from the outset,” said Union City Deputy City Manager Acosta said. “But we have also had the support of individuals and businesses from across the country. We are proud to get this far and we look forward to the day when people from all over can stop here for a few minutes and reflect on the sacrifice of the men and women who perished on September 11.”
