Public Works Maintenance Facility

An environmentally friendly Green Business!

Almost since the day it opened in 2000, the City of Union City's Public Works Maintenance Facility has been designated as an official Bay Area Green Business. Located on Seventh Street near Mission Boulevard, it was one of the the first public facilities of its kind in California to receive certification.

To be designated as a Green Business, a facility must meet numerous environmental requirements. The Union City operation was recognized for implementing energy conservation, water conservation, solid waste reduction and hazardous waste pollution practices.

Operated by the City's Public Works Department, 11-acre maintenance facility and yard is where you’ll find the Building and Grounds, Fleet and Streets Divisions. City vehicles are serviced there as well, and it’s also home base for Union City Transit buses.

A self-serve CNG fueling station is located in front of the facility and is open to the public 24/7. Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) has become increasingly popular as an alternative to gasoline. CNG vehicles produce less hydrocarbons (major component of air pollution and smog), resulting in a cleaner, healthier environment.

The City is very proud of this achievement and recognition and strongly supports the Bay Area Green Business Program and the protection of the environment.
