Battery & Cell Phone Recycling

Curbside collection of common household batteries and cell phones is available in Union City. Accepted items include AAA, AA, C, D, button cell, 9-volt, alkaline, rechargeable, lithium and coin cells, small button-size batteries for watches and hearing aids and all cell phones and cell phone batteries.

  • Call Tri-CED at 429-8030 to request a clear plastic zip-lock bag for battery and cell phone recycling.
  • Put batteries and cell phones in the bag. For safety reasons, please tape the ends of lithium batteries.
  • Place the sealed plastic bag on the ground next to your brown recycling cart (not inside the cart) on your collection day.
  • No car batteries please.

For your convenience, the City of Union City has also established battery collection stations at City Hall and in our community centers. Look for the battery drop-off display at the following locations:

  • City Hall, 34009 Alvarado-Niles Road
  • Senior Center, 33997 Alvarado-Niles Road
  • Union City Sports Center, 31224 Union City Blvd
  • Kennedy Center, 1333 Decoto Road

Why can't I throw my batteries in the trash can?

Batteries are considered hazardous because of the metals and/or other toxic or corrosive materials contained within. For this reason, all batteries must be recycled, or taken to a household hazardous waste disposal facility, a universal waste handler, or an authorized recycling facility.

For additional information on how to dispose of household hazardous waste, contact the Alameda County Household Hazardous Waste Collection Facility at (800) 606-6606 or click on Alameda County HHW.

Thank you for helping the environment and making our community a better place to live.
